Understanding the Operating Temperature Range for the ioDrive

The ioDrive is designed to operate in a system where the ambient temperature ranges from 0 to 55 degrees Celcius, and with at least 300 Linear Feet per Minute (LFM) of airflow through the system.

The ioDrive has the ability to monitor the core temperature of the onboard controller chip. This temperature is reported in fio-status as "Internal temperature." The controller temperature should not exceed 85°C*.

Note: fio-status provides an additional temperature reading referred to as either "Ambient temperature" or "Board temperature," depending on the driver level. This temperature reading is not to be used in place of proprietary server chassis ambient temperature when determining the operational environment. As a best practice, please use the proprietary server chassis ambient temperature reading when determining the operational thermal environment (maximum 55°C). If the chassis ambient temperature is unavailable, use a thermal couple to determine the operational thermal environment.

Thermal Protection in Driver Version 2.x

Thermal protection is built into driver versions 2.1.0 and later. In order to protect against thermal damage, the ioDrive will start throttling write performance once the controller temperature reaches 78°C. If the controller temperature continues to rise, the ioDrive will shut down once the controller temperature reaches 85°C.

$ fio-status -a
